Massachusetts Dog Racing Ban Approaches As Greyhounds Run Final Races

World News Update by EQUITIES Magazine

The last greyhound race in Massachusetts is at Raynham Park on December 26. It may be the last time greyhounds race anywhere in New England. Nationally in 2009, seven tracks stopped racing and only 23 continue to run.

In Massachusetts, activists citing the mistreatment of dogs led an effort that resulted in voters banning dog racing on Jan. 1, 2010.

Vermont and Maine have outlawed racing. Twin River, Rhode Island's only dog track, is looking to end racing as a step in its bankruptcy reorganization. New Hampshire's two tracks ceased live racing earlier this year for financial reasons and Connecticut's last greyhound track shut its doors in 2006.
