Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi Remains Hospitalized Following Attack

Italy’s Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is spending a second night in a Milan hospital following a brutal attack Sunday evening in which he was struck in the face by a statue thrown by a man who is believed to have a history of mental illness.

Berlusconi had been standing near his vehicle Sunday evening signing autographs and speaking with a  crowd when Massimo Tartaglia, the alleged suspect, hurled a model statue of the Milan cathedral at the PM. The blow broke Berlusconi’s nose and two teeth and caused a large cut on his lip.

Security personnel hurried Berlusconi into the vehicle and rushed him to San Raffaele hospital where he was being treated for his injuries. According to reports he has been given pain medication and will have his nose reset but will not undergo surgery.

Questions have already started concerning how the attack could have occurred as Berlusconi was surrounded by bodyguards and security. An investigation into the attack has been launched. Tartaglia was arrested and has been charged with aggravated assault.
