Tiger Woods has an ally in Nike Inc., which signed a multiyear contract with the pro golfer in 2006.
"He is the best golfer in the world and one of the greatest athletes of his era," Nike spokeswoman Beth Gast said in a statement. "We look forward to his return to golf. He and his family have Nike's full support."
Today, Accenture Ltd. was the first sponsor to drop Woods, though Proctor & Gamble’s Gillette announced last week that they would not run their Woods’ advertisements.
Nike chairman and co-founder Phil Knight said the scandal surrounding world’s number one golfer is “part of the game” when it comes to signing endorsement deals with athletes. He added that Nike checked out Woods' background before signing its deal with the golfer and "he came out clean", adding when Woods' career is over, “we'll look back on these indiscretions as a minor blip.”
