Mr. Universe Faces Assault and Resisting Arrest Charges after Mistakenly Being Labeled Intoxicated.
All Doug Burns wanted to do was watch a movie.
Burns, the current Mr. Universe, had sat down in his seat to watch a film when he began to feel dizzy and experienced problems with his vision. As a diabetic, Burns recognized that he was suffering from low blood sugar and quickly made his way to the theater’s snack counter to boost his level.
A security guard at the theater noticed the disoriented Burns and mistakenly thought the bodybuilder had been drinking and asked hi to leave. Burns reportedly refused and the guard called police who then sprayed Burns with Mace before wrestling the 43-year-old to the ground.
Police said that when they arrived Burns had lunged at an officer and was prepared to fight, leading to the Mace and the ensuing wrestling match.
Burns is now facing charges of assaulting an officer and resisting arrest despite the misunderstanding. According to Redwood City Police Capt. Chris Cessina “If he had just stood there and let us help him, maybe they would have called the medics if he didn't seem to fit the description of being under the influence.”
Burns has said that he does not remember the incident clearly.
