'American Idol' Takes on the American Classics with a Little Help from Tony Bennett

‘American Idol’ will not be going old-school tonight, but rather, older-school. With Tony Bennett acting as their mentor, the nine finalist of ‘Idol’ will get their chance to sing some of the great American classics tonight, an opportunity that might scar some of the audience.

Having already gone through the Motown theme and last weeks pop genre, Lakisha Jones, Melinda Doolittle, Blake Lewis, Jordin Sparks, Phil Stacey, Chris Richardson, Gina Glocksen, Haley Scarnato and yes Sanjaya Malakar will belt out tunes from an era gone bye.

While the ‘Idol’ hopefuls haven’t revealed their song choices there is a wealth of artists to select from; greats like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Pat Boone, Rosemary Clooney, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Nat King Cole and Mr. Bennett himself stand a good chance of being heard.

How Simon, Paula and Randy react to tonight’s ‘Idol’ performances will be interesting and could determine how voters cast their ballots in tomorrows ‘American Idol’ elimination show.
