Several Guantanamo Bay inmates will be making their way north after it was announced between 35 to 90 detainees would be transferred to Thomson Correctional Center in Thomson, Illinois.
Closing Guantanamo Bay has been an initiative of U.S. President Barack Obama since he took office and news of the inmate transfer could be a major step in reaching that goal. Obama had initially called for the detention center to be closed by January but several obstacles have led him to push that date to later in 2010.
It has been Obama’s belief that terrorists have been using the detention center at Guantanamo Bay as a recruiting tool and by closing the facility militant groups like al-Qaeda would suffer. That belief was echoed in a statement from a U.S. official that said, “Closing the detention centre at Guantanamo is essential to protecting our national security and helping our troops by removing a deadly recruiting tool from the hands of al-Qaeda
The Thomson Correctional Center has a capacity for 1,600 inmates but currently houses just 200 prisoners due to budget constraints. To facilitate the Guantanamo Bay transfer the Thomson prison would be sold to the Federal Bureau of Prisons who would then lease part of the prison to the Department of Defense.
