College Football News: AP All-America Team Announced, Alabama Crimson Tide Dominate

The AP announced their college football All-America team on Tuesday and the #1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide fielded six players on the squad, more than any other school.

Heading the list of Crimson Tide players on the first-team All-America list was Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram and his chief hole-creator Michael Johnson earned a spot as a guard. On the defensive side of the ball cornerback Javier Arenas, linebacker Roland McClain and defensive tackle Terrence Cody all took honors while kicker Leigh Tiffin was the sixth Crimson Tide on the team.

Ingram’s closest competitor in the Heisman race, Stanford’s running back Toby Gerhart, was also named to the first-team as was third-place finisher quarterback Colt McCoy from the Texas Longhorns. Nebraska Cornhuskers defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy race, also earned an All-America first-team spot.

McCoy had some Texas company as his favorite target, Jordan Shipley, also made the list as did safety Earl Thomas. With three players on the first-team All-America squad Texas was second only to Alabama for most players on the team, a fitting scenario as the two schools will square off in the BCS National Championship Game on January 7.

The Florida Gators had a pair of players make the first-team as cornerback Joe Haden and tight end Aaron Hernandez were recognized. Gators QB Tim Tebow was named to the AP All-America second-team.

Alabama and Florida led the charge in the SEC, accounting for eight All-Americas but the conference also placed Tennessee Volunteers safety Eric Berry, South Carolina Gamecocks linebacker Eric Norwood and Georgia Bulldogs punter Drew Berry on the first-team, making the SEC the most represented conference.

The offensive line was dominated by the Big 12 as Oklahoma State Cowboys tackle Russell Okung, Oklahoma Sooners Trent Williams and Baylor Bears J.D. Walton all earned spots. Idaho Vandals guard Mike Iuapti wrapped up the line.

Rounding out the defensive first-team was TCU Horned Frogs defensive end Jerry Hughes and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Derrick Morgan.

The offensive first-team was completed by Notre Dame Fighting Irish wide receiver Golden Tate and Clemson Tide running back C.J. Spiller.
