Companies Make Tough Decisions about Woods Endorsement

Financial World News Update by Equities Magazine

The Tiger Woods debacle has led many companies to consider whether they would like the golfer to continue representing them as a spokesperson. While many companies have yet to announce their positions, Upper Deck Co., maker of sports cards and memorabilia, has issued a statement that it will continue to support Tiger Woods through his hiatus from golf and amid his very public personal difficulties.

Since 2001, Woods has acted as the sole spokesperson for Upper Deck. The company sells signed photographs, shoes and cards of Woods for up to a thousand dollars. The length of his contract with the California based corporation has not been publicly announced.

Upper Deck’s continued endorsement of Woods comes after major consulting firm and sponsor Accenture dropped the golfer on Sunday. Unlike Upper Deck, Accenture relied on Tiger to push the integrity of the company, something that now seems laughable in light of multiple allegation of Wood’s extramarital dalliances.

Upper Deck relies more upon Woods extraordinary skill as a golfer and less on his personal life. Other companies faced with the decision of whether to continue to support the golfer will have to weigh their own aims in choosing Woods as their spokesperson.

According to figures released from TNS Media Intelligence on Tuesday Woods' ads using Woods name or image have cost his top six sponsors around $79.3 million.
