Perhaps someday kids will be reading about this ‘American Idol’ season in a sociology course. When did America lose faith in “reality TV”? What causes teenage girls to ignore the cost of text messaging and vote for the vocally challenged? Why do certain people make it their mission to destroy a seemingly harmless show?
No doubt, there are studies being done and funds being raised to answer these questions but in the mean time ‘American Idol’ took another hit on Wednesday when Gina Glocksen got “Malakared,” that is, voted off despite being better than at least one other contestant.
Even more surprising than Glocksen getting the boot was her company in the Bottom Three. Haley Scarnato and Phil Stacey stood alongside Glocksen in the tense moments leading to the verdict. Malakar was relaxing with the rest of the ‘Idols’ taking in the moment.
While Glocksen was never really a favorite to win, and Scarnato and Stacey will undoubtedly face the same fate soon, the continued support for Malakar must be worrying the producers of ‘American Idol.’ It wouldn’t be so bad if that support turned into potential record sales but that’s not what’s going to happen. For whatever reason, people are no so much as voting for Malakar as they are voting against ‘American Idol.’
So Glocksen goes home this week, next week it will be either Scarnato or Stacey and then things will get interesting. If Malakar can squeeze his way into the Top 5 ‘American Idol’ might start working on a back room deal with the 17-year-old.
