Barry Bonds Goes Deep in Giants Loss to Padres

Barry Bonds connected on a 2-2 pitch from San Diego Padres starter Chris Young in the bottom of the first inning and sent it into the first row beyond the centerfield wall for his first homerun of the season. It was career homerun number 735 for the man playing in his 22nd season, pulling him to within 20 of Hank Aaron’s record 755.

The homerun gave the San Francisco Giants a 1-0 lead and Omar Vizquel put the Giants ahead 2-0 in the third with a single, plating Dave Roberts.

Khalil Green led off the top of the fifth with a solo homerun off Matt Cain to pull the Padres within one. Marcus Giles then put San Diego in front with a two run blast.

In the top of the sixth the Giants evened the score when Pedro Feliz singled home Ray Durham with two outs.

Brad Hennessey pitched a perfect seventh inning for the Giants but served up a two run bomb to Adrian Gonzalez in the eighth to give the Padres a 5-3 lead. Scott Linebrink kept the Giants scoreless in the bottom half of the eight and Trevor Hoffman closed the door in the ninth for his first save. Both Marcus Giles and Adrain Gonzalez went 3-4 for the Padres.
