Kuykendall has been the California newpaper's vice president of sales and marketing since 2007.
The 56-year-old Kansas native began her career with McClatchy in 1973 as a classified telephone sales representative for the Modesto Bee. She rose through the ranks at the Bee and became its vice president for operations in 2004 before heading to the Sun-Star in 2007.
In a statement Monday, McClatchy's chairman and CEO Gary Pruitt called Kuykendall "a dynamic, experienced executive who knows Merced and the Central Valley inside and out."
She replaces former publisher Hank Vander Veen, who resigned in November.
