NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen delivered a number of “concrete proposals” to Russia, each proposal designed to aid in fighting Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan. Rasmussen specifically requested Russia provide helicopters, something NATO forces consider crucial in their efforts to defeat the Taliban.
Rasmussen was quoted as saying, “I think Russia could contribute in a very concrete way by providing helicopters, helicopter training and spare parts.” While Russia has voiced support for NATO’s efforts in Afghanistan they have taken few actions to back their talk.
Russia has long had a cool relationship with NATO, believing the body to be anti-Moscow. That belief was further enhanced by NATO’s response to last year’s Russian-Georgian war in which NATO clearly sided with Georgia.
Despite the cool relationship Rasmussen embarked on a three-day visit to Russia, hoping to develop closer ties through talks with President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Rasmussen also stressed that while the two sides may not see eye-to-eye on everything “Disagreements should not overshadow the fact that, basically, we share security interests in many areas because we are faced with the same threats.”
