Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson Begin Masters Quest at Augusta National

The 71st Masters begins today with Tiger Woods aiming to capture his fifth green jacket while fellow American Phil Mickelson is in search of number three.

Mickelson, the defending champion, will tee off at 10:56 this morning, Tiger will begin his assault on the revered course some three hours later. For many, the hopes of the two giants being paired together for Sunday’s final round would be a dream come true.

Among those looking to knock off the two titans and put another jacket in their closet are Larry Mize, Mar O’Mera, Ben Crenshaw and Vijay Singh.

Woods is chasing history over the next four days as he attempts to get within one of Jack Nicklaus’ record six Masters championships. A victory for Woods will place him second in the all time wins list at Augusta, breaking a tie he shares with Arnold Palmer.

Tiger already holds several Masters records including youngest champion, 21 years 3 months and widest margin of victory, a 12 stroke advantage ewhen he won his first titlke in 1997.
