Police have clashed with protestors who attempted to break through a fence that surrounded a venue hosting the UN climate summit in Copenhagen.
The protestors had been expressing anger at the lack of progress by the UN in establishing a new climate deal and that frustration led to a march to the Bella Centre where the conference was being held. Upon reaching the center the protestors encountered a swarm of police and a clash ensued.
Using tear gas and their batons police were able to push back the protestors but several injuries on both sides were reported. At least 200 protestors were arrested as the conference center was placed on virtual lockdown for security reasons.
Talks at the climate summit have failed to reach any concrete agreement as several questions surrounding proposals remain. China has taken exception to the proceedings, saying they lack transparency while developed countries continue to press developing countries to make verifiable concessions to adhere to a new deal.
Among the most pressing issues on the table are emissions standards, financing for developing countries to shift toward clean energy technology and an international monitoring body to ensure countries adhere to the new deal.
