Tiger Woods may be experiencing a meltdown in his personal life but that had little bearing in the Associated Press vote for Athlete of the Decade as the world’s greatest golfer took the honor on Wednesday with cyclist Lance Armstrong finishing second and tennis star Roger Federer ranking third in the vote.
Woods, receiving 56 of the 142 votes, dominated the golf course over the past decade with 64 wins including 12 majors. Of his 64 wins during the decade 56 were PGA tour victories, a figure that translated to a 30% win mark in PGA tournaments played.
While voting for the Athlete of the Decade has been taking place for some time the majority of the ballots were cast following November’s revelation that Woods had been having a series of extra-marital affairs. Voters didn’t appear to be swayed by the news, choosing not to ignore the fact that Woods dominated his sport like no other athlete while elevating the awareness of golf to levels never reached before.
As dominant as Woods was on the golf course Lance Armstrong was just as impressive on the bike with six Tour de France wins. Armstrong earned 33 votes in the balloting to finish second. Tennis superstar Roger Federer finished third in the voting with 25 votes after wining more Grand Slam victories than any man in history while collecting career Grand Slam.
Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps finished fourth in the voting while Tom Brady and Usain Bolt finished fifth and sixth respectively.
