‘American Idol’ has mastered the art of television appeal with their reality based singing competition, now they are turning their attention to those who put the lyrics in the mouth of their stars. A new competition geared towards songwriters has been unveiled by ‘American Idol’ and now any songwriter at least 18-years-old and not signed to an exclusive publishing deal have their chance to hear their song belted out in front of millions of ‘Idol’ viewers.
Simon Fuller, the creator of ‘American Idol’ has been working on the concept for some time and believes the time is right for a partnership between ‘Idol’ winner and songwriter. Fuller said “Having an undiscovered songwriter create the winner's single seemed like a natural next step for our show, not only do the fans pick their American Idol, but also his or her first single.”
Much like the early stages of ‘American Idol,’ the songwriters will be weeded out by a set of judges, Fuller being one of them. The online competition will be whittled down to the top 20 songs and then it will be up to the public to vote on their favorite.
The winning songwriter will then have their song performed by the two ‘American Idol’ finalist during the show’s finale. Whoever is crowned the next ‘American Idol’ will then record the song as their first single.
While many songwriters dream of hearing their lyrics sung in front of millions they may be getting a bit nervous the longer Sanjaya Malakar stays in the ‘American Idol’ competition. Having Melinda Doolittle or LaKisha Jones sing your song is one thing having Malakar introduce it to the world might signal the end of a short lived career.
