Andean Trade Preference Act Extended For One More Year

Finance World News Update by EQUITIES Magazine

The House of Representatives extended the Andean Trade Preferences Act for one more year. The move means that Columbia, Ecuador and Peru can continue to export certain goods, such as clothing and footwear, to the U.S. free of duty.

In effect since 1991, the ATPA requires the involved countries to take part in an anti-narcotics program to eradicate the drug trade in their countries. In 2009, President George W. Bush asked that Bolivia, which was once part of the ATPA, be removed after it failed to participate in the anti-narcotics program.
