Guinea Military Leader Capt Moussa Dadis Camara Could Face Charges in “Premeditated” Massacre

A Human Rights Watch report has indicated that Guinea’s military leader Capt Moussa Dadis Camara should be investigated for the “premeditated” massacre in September that resulted in the deaths of 157 protesters.

Camara blamed the deaths on rogue soldiers and said the majority of those killed in the incident were trampled and not shot. Those claims were discredited by the Human Rights Watch report which stated the military attempted to cover up the events by removing a number of bodies from hospitals and burying them in a mass grave.

According to Human Rights Watch Emergencies Director Peter Bouckaert, “The serious abuses carried out in Guinea on September 28 were clearly not the actions of a group of rogue, undisciplined soldiers, as the Guinean government contends.”

Witnesses to the massacre have reported members of Guinea’s presidential guard firing into the crowd of protesters until they ran out of bullets and those claims were backed by the Human Rights Watch findings. They have called the massacre a crime against humanity and demanded a number of government officials face trial for their direct involvement or their responsibility for the actions of those soldiers.
