The Notre Dame football program will almost certainly remain independent despite renewed talk that the Big Ten was considering expansion.
While the Fighting Irish schedule routinely includes the Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans and Purdue Boilermakers, all Big Ten schools, the preference to remain independent stands. According to athletic director Jack Swarbrick, “Independence is a big part of the tradition of the program and our identity. We'd sure like to try to maintain it.”
A move to the Big Ten would likely cost Notre Dame their annual games against the USC Trojans and Navy Midshipmen.
