Most businesses struggle with company morale and developing a greater sense of collaboration. At the Hoboken-based creative agency Consorte Marketing, the focus is on uniting employees and generating productivity by exploring creative possibilities.SteampunkGoggles.com, an ecommerce site launched by Consorte, has taken one gigantic step after another in that direction. Their latest creative endeavor is a Kickstarter project to print decks of Bicycle® playing cards with original Steampunk artwork by Brooklyn-based illustrator Mike Lees.
The original artwork includes court cards where the characters wear artistic renditions of actual steampunk goggles available for sale at SteampunkGoggles.com. The suits are divided into four common steampunk genre character types—Industrials (spades), The Glitterati (diamonds), Lover and Rogues (hearts) and Aviators (clubs).
This project was born from one marketing companies’ desire to experiment with an ecommerce site of their own, with no client restrictions. In their view, there seemed no better way to do this than with a genre that was also limitless. “The energy level behind this steampunk site is continuing to grow immensely from the natural excitement of imaginative play. This project is leading us down new paths that we would never have been able to explore with client limitations. After test marketing innovative ideas, we can present them to our clients with proven results,” says Dennis Consorte, founder of SteampunkGoggles.com and Consorte Marketing.
In Consorte’s view, creativity doesn’t stop with promoting the product line. Before production of the playing card decks begins, steampunk enthusiasts and project backers have the unique opportunity to collaborate with the creative team on the details of the illustrations. Commenters are able to leave feedback about current design concepts and indicate their preferences and ideas, and a limited number of funders who meet certain pledge amounts will have their likenesses depicted on joker or court cards. Binghamton University student and magician Dan Garf pledged the King and Queen of Hearts for himself and his girlfriend. He is consulting with Consorte on making the deck magician-friendly with special features and cards, while it remains playable as a standard poker deck. Other rewards, starting at just $10, include delivery of standard and limited edition decks, as well as goggles from the Steampunk Goggles store.
