U.S. President Barack Obama Calls on World Leaders to Take Action at UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen

Stressing that time was running out to strike a deal U.S. President Barack Obama urged world leaders to come together and take collective action at the UN climate summit being held in Copenhagen.

Heading into its final day the climate summit had produced no concrete agreement among the participating countries in regards to minimizing climate change. Obama addressed that failure while speaking before the participants stating, “While the science of climate change is not in doubt, I think our ability to take collective action is in doubt right now, and it hangs in the balance.”

Obama warned that leaving the summit without a deal would lead to “unacceptable risks” to the planet, world economy and international security.

Following his speech Obama met with China’s Premier Wen Jiabao for about an hour in what many consider to be the make-or-break moment for an agreement. China has, thus far, refused to set stronger carbon emissions targets or agree to international monitoring of their missions controls.

World leaders from 193 nations have been in Copenhagen in an attempt to reach an agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions but the task has proven difficult as communication between developed countries and developing countries has been strained.
