Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is grown between 3,000 and 5,500 feet up in the Blue Mountain range. These mountains dominate the eastern third of the island of Jamaica, located between Kingston to the south and the Port Maria to the north. The upper reaches of the mountains are preserved as forest while the lower slopes are dedicated to coffee production.
Only coffee grown in these mountains and at the aforementioned altitude are allowed to hold the Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee label. The label is a globally protected certification mark under the administration of the Jamaican Coffee Industry Board. The coffee grown the next level down is referred to as High Mountain and the lowest is called Jamaica Supreme, however Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is still the superior cup of coffee.
The only thing better than a cup of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is a cup of Jamaican Blue Mountain Peaberry coffee for reason that are still being debated. There may be more nutrients packed in a single bean causing the more robust flavors, or the rounded bean could get a more even burn during the roasting process. Whatever the reason, Peaberry coffee is easily a more intense and flavorful form of any coffee and especially Jamaican Blue Mountain.
