Yemeni Detainees at Guantanamo Bay to be Repatriated

According to a Washington Post report six Yemeni detainees being held at the Guantanamo Bay detention center will be repatriated.

It is believed the decision to release the six men was made following high-level talks between U.S. officials and the Yemen government. There has been no report on when the six men will be returned but it is likely to occur in the next few days.

U.S. President Barack Obama has made closing Guantanamo Bay one of his most pressing goals, calling the detention center a tool for al-Qaeda and Taliban terrorists. He has vowed to shut the Cuban center by 2010 and a report earlier this week indicated that several of the prisoners would be transferred to a prison in Illinois.

Nearly half the 215 detainees at Guantanamo are said to be Yemenis.
