Theme Parks Boom in the East

Financial World News Update by Equities Magazine

The global recession led several U.S. theme parks into the ground and halted construction on a number planned for the Middle East, but in Asia, amusement parks are being built with haste.

A Universal Studios is expected to open its gates in early 2010 in Singapore while Hong Kong awaits the $750 million revamping of Ocean Park slated for completion in 2013. Hong Kong’s Disney land is also expanding with an estimated price tag of $465 million.

Elsewhere in the East, Malaysia is breaking ground on Asia’s first Legoland expected to open in 2012 and a Disney Land has been approved in Shanghai.

When completed, the theme parks are expected to be a draw for the East’s expanding middle class. Where them park attendance in the U.S. has declined, turnout to parks in Asia has been steadily climbing as the region maintains a stability that eludes much of the rest of the world.
