Madagascar Leader Andry Rajoelina Dismisses PM

In a move sure to anger international mediators attempting to bring peace to the island Madagascar’s leader, Andry Rajoelina, has dismissed Prime Minister Eugène Régis Mangalaza.

Rajoelina appointed Mangalaza as prime minister in October as part of a power-sharing deal designed to stabilize the country’s political problems. On Wednesday Rajoelina announced that it was no longer possible for him to work with his rivals and on Friday Mangalaza was out.

Rajoelina took the office of the presidency in March following the resignation of Marc Ravalomanana but that has done little to quell the violence or appease the international community, many of whom do not recognize the legitimacy of the current government.

Rajoelina has called for parliamentary elections to be held in March 2010.
