Matt Ryan tossed a 6-yard touchdown pass to Tony Gonzalez on a fourth and goal with 1:38 left in the fourth quarter to give the Atlanta Falcons (7-7) a 10-7 advantage over the New York Jets (7-7) and Brent Grimes preserved the lead with his second interception of Mark Sanchez to deal a serious blow to NY’s playoff hopes.
Atlanta jumped on the board in the first quarter with a 24-yard field goal from Matt Bryant but the Jets answered with a 65-yard touchdown pass from Sanchez to Braylon Edwards to move in front 7-3. That score would stand until Matt Ryan and Tony Gonzalez hooked up late in the fourth but what happened in between was where the Jets lost the game.
Jay Feely missed a pair of field goals, one of them blocked and Sanchez tossed three interceptions, the final one floating into the hands of Grimes that ended the game. Despite gaining just 238 yards of offense the Falcons managed to capitalize on New York’s mistakes to pick up the road win.
