Madagascar leader Andry Rajoelina has abandoned a power-sharing deal put in place to stabilize the country and has installed a military prime minister to replace the recently sacked Prime Minister Eugene Mangalaza.
Rajoelina had agreed to a power-sharing deal that led to the appointment of Mangalaza in October but on Friday the leader announced the PM was out. In addition to dropping Mangalaza the president scrapped the two posts of co-president that had been part of the power-sharing deal.
In place of Mangalaza the military leader Col Vital Albert Camille has been named to the position of prime minister. Rajoelina, who took the office of the presidency in March after then President Marc Ravalomanana fled, has announced that parliamentary elections will be held in March 2010.
The events in Madagascar have been condemned by the African Union as well as several others in the international community, many of whom do not recognize the legitimacy of the current government.
