Somali MPs meeting in Mogadishu on Monday faced mortar fire from Islamist militants opposed to the UN-backed government. At least ten people were killed in the attack but reports have suggested that parliamentary members were not among the dead.
As the MPs came under attack government forces returned fire with several shells, one of which hit a radio station.
Members of Somalia’s parliament had been meeting for the first time since August. There have been no claims of responsibility for the attack but many suspect the militant group al-Shabab which has been responsible for numerous attacks in Somalia.
Somali has lacked a functioning national government since 1991 and the UN-backed government in Mogadishu has faced constant resistance from hard-line Islamists.
