Carmelo Anthony scored 33 points, Allen Iverson added 24 and Marcus Camby pulled down 22 rebounds as the Denver Nuggets (41-36) beat the struggling Los Angeles Lakers (40-38) 115-111 for their sixth straight win.
The Lakers moved out to an 11-5 early in the first quarter but the Nuggets went on an 11-1 run to take a 16-12 lead. By the end of the quarter Denver had pushed their lead to 32-23.
Denver extended their lead to 15 points midway through the second quarter but by the time Luke Walton buried a three-pointer at the buzzer the Lakers were trailing by seven.
Los Angeles continued to battle in the third and Andrew Bynum brought the Lakers to within two but Denver ran off ten straight to lift their lead to 82-70. Anthony scored ten in the third and the Nuggets took a 92-82 lead into the fourth quarter.
When Iverson drove the lane and hit a layup with 9:08 left in the game the Nuggets were up 100-87 and looked ready to put the Lakers away. Los Angeles wasn’t willing to pack it in and an 18-4 run gave the Lakers their first lead since the first quarter. The two teams traded buckets with Denver moving up 112-109 with 9 seconds left on the clock.
Kobe Bryant hit a pair of free-throws to bring the Lakers to within one but Anthony put the Nuggets back in front by three. Bryant had a chance to tie the score with a three-pointer with 2 seconds left on the clock but his shot fell short.
Bryant finished with 23 points on 9-30 shooting in the loss. Los Angeles has now dropped four of their last five games
