With the fate of Saab in doubt the Swedish government has held emergency meetings with unions in preparation of the carmaker’s closure.
While a bid from Dutch luxury car firm Spyker remains on the table that offer is set to expire on Monday and if that fails it will would likely seal Saab’s fate. Despite fears that the deal will fall through Spyker’s chief executive Victor Muller has said, “We are very confident that our renewed offer will remove the impasse that was standing in the way of an agreement on Friday, and this would still allow us to conclude the deal prior to the expiry of the deadline originally set by GM.”
General Motors, which owns Saab, has said they would eliminate the carmaker but that news brought on a flurry of offers, most seriously from Spyker.
A closure of Saab would be a blow to Sweden as it employs about 3,400 people but the carmaker has not posted profits since 2001 and represents just 1.1% of GM’s global sales.
