Lionel Messi capped an incredible 2009 by earning FIFA’s top award, World Footballer of the Year, becoming the first Argentinean to land the title since its inception in 1991.
Messi, 22, easily outdistanced Cristiano Ronaldo in the vote cast by captains and head coaches of men’s and women’s national teams. Messi picked up 1,073 votes while Ronaldo finished with 352 and Xavi totaled 196.
Earlier this month Messi was named European Footballer of the Year.
