Ethiopian Court Sentences Five to Death for Assassination Plots

An Ethiopian court has sentenced five men to death and another 33 people to life in prison for their part in plotting to assassinate government officials.

Among those sentenced to death was Berhanu Nega, leader of the U.S.-based dissident group Ginbot 7, as well as opposition leader Melaku Tefera.

In addressing the sentence Judge Adem Ibrahim stated those convicted to death “have committed grave offences and four of them have not learnt from their previous sentences.” Ibrahim continued, “Therefore, we have been obliged to give the most severe sentences.”

All five men sentenced to death were called political leaders in the plot. One of those sentenced to death, secretary general of Ginbot 7 Andergachew Tsege, reacted to the ruling stating, “We know the price of freedom - the preservation of rights always forces us to pay sacrifice and if that sacrifice means to be sentenced to death, so be it.”
