Serbia Submits Formal Application to Join EU

Serbian President Boris Tadic submitted a formal application to join the European Union, handing Sweden’s Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt the request while in Stockholm. Reinfeldt is the current president of the 27-nation EU.

While Serbia has officially requested membership to the EU the country still has a number of issues that need to be resolved before their application is considered. Chief among those issues is the capture of two war criminals believed to be hiding in the country.

Both men, Gen Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic, have been indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. The ICTY has said Serbia’s co-operation in the hunt for the two men is improving but more needs to be done.

Serbia could find relief in a report expected in June from the chief prosecutor. If that report indicates Serbia’s efforts in the search have been positive then that could open the door to EU membership but that could still be four years down the road.
