A provincial governor in the Colombian province of Caquetta has been kidnapped by gunmen who stormed his house in the capital Florencia.
According to reports Luis Fernando Cuellar was in his home when the gunmen, dressed in military uniforms, launched an attack. The attackers, believed to be members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), threw several grenades at the home and engaged in a gunfight with security guards before seizing Cuellar.
A rescue operation is said to be in place but the area is one of FARC’s few remaining strongholds in Colombia. The rebel group, which once had as many as 16,000 soldiers, has taken a hit from the efforts of President Alvaro Uribe who has worked to eradicate the militants.
