The Ottawa Senators got off to a quick start and never let up as they took advantage of home-ice and beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference playoff series.
The Senators got on the board in the first period when Andrej Meszaros’ shot from the high slot beat Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury at the 1:37 mark. Five minutes later it was Chris Kelley who found the back of the net for the Senators after stealing the puck from defenseman Mark Eaton.
In the second period the Senators used a power play goal from Tom Preissing to bump their lead to 3-0.
Pittsburgh tried to stop the Senators onslaught and Jordan Staal gave them a brief moment of hope when he made the score 3-1 with just over three minutes left in the second.
Dany Heatley pushed the Senators lead back to three 9 seconds into the third period when he scored on a power play. Ottawa scored twice more in the next eight minutes to burden the Penguins with a 6-1 advantage.
The Penguins were able to score twice in the final seven and a half minutes with goals from Sergei Gonchar and Sidney Crosby but the Senators were just too strong for Pittsburgh.
