NHL Playoffs: Anaheim Takes Game One From Wild with Third Period Goal

Dustin Penner’s goal with 5:20 remaining in the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Anaheim Ducks skated past the Minnesota Wild 2-1 to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven Western Conference playoff series.

The Wild took the lead in the second period when Pavol Demitra slipped one past Ilya Bryzgalov for a 1-0 advantage but Anaheim knotted it up on a Teemu Selanne goal with 9:52 left on the clock.

Penner scored the deciding goal after Minnesota’s defenseman Kim Johnsson and goalie Niklas Backstrom collided. With the puck sitting in the crease Penner poked it in for the go-ahead goal.

Bryzgalov, who was starting in goal for the Ducks, stopped 24 shots in the win.
