Body of Kidnapped Colombian Provincial Governor Luis Francisco Cuellar Found

The body of Luis Francisco Cuellar, provincial governor of the southern Colombian province of Caqueta, was found by authorities on Tuesday, less than a day after he was kidnapped from his home by suspected rebels.

According to reports about ten gunmen, believed to be members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), lobbed several grenades at Cuellar’s house before engaging in a gunfight with security guards.

A massive search for Cuellar was launched but officials eventually found his body near a burned out vehicle, his throat had been slit and his body had several bullet wounds.

President Alvaro Uribe addressed Cuellar’s death in a nationally televised delivery stating, “In the midst of pain we reiterate today all our determination to defeat these terrorists.”

Caqueta is said to be one of FARC’s few remaining strongholds in Colombia. The rebel group, which once had as many as 16,000 soldiers, has taken a hit from the efforts of President Uribe who has worked to eradicate the militants.
