Nestle has announced it will suspend its operations at its dairy plant in Zimbabwe indefinitely after claiming employee safety could no longer be guaranteed.
The company had been facing international pressure to stop purchasing milk from a farm owned by the wife of President Robert Mugabe. Grace Mugabe took control of the Gushungo Dairy Estate when the government seized farms from white owners.
Once Grace Mugabe took control of Gushungo the Swiss multinational Nestle was strongly encouraged by the government to continue purchasing milk from the dairy farm. According to reports as recentlyas Saturday staff members at Nestle were forced to accept a delivery from Gushungo.
Nestle had said they would stop buying milk from the Mugabe-owned farm back in October after several human rights organizations call for a boycott of their products. Despite their intentions to sever any ties, Nestle continued to feel pressure from the government eventually leading them to decide to shutdown their operations.
