Eritrea Facing Sanctions from UN Security Council

The UN Security Council has backed a resolution to impose sanctions on Eritrea, claiming the African nation has been providing support for Islamic insurgents in Somalia, specifically al-Shabab.

That militant group was mentioned directly in the resolution as the UN Security Council demanded Eritrea “cease arming, training and equipping armed groups and their members including al-Shabab.” Eritrea has denied all allegations that they have supported Islamic insurgents in Somalia.

Despite those denials the UN came down hard on Eritrea, imposing an arms embargo on the country as well as travel bans and freezes assets of businesses and individuals.
