A Colorado judge sentenced Richard and Mayumi Heene to
serve time in jail for falsely reporting their 6-year-old son was airborne in a
homemade balloon.
Richard Heene will serve 90 days in jail. “I’m very, very
sorry, and I want to apologize to all the rescue workers out there and the
people who got involved in the community,” he said.
Mayumi Heene received 20 days in jail for her part in the
hoax. They both received 4 years of probation and must pay restitution. The Heenes
are also barred from profiting financially from the hoax.
The balloon hoax happened in October when Mayumi called
911 and reported her son Falcon Heene had climbed in the homemade balloon and
set it adrift. Authorities, rescue workers and military aircraft tracked the
balloon until it landed in an empty field. Falcon was not inside.
Falcon was found hiding in the family’s attic. He later
admitted to authorities his parents made him and his two brothers go along with
the hoax in an effort to get their own reality show.
