AccuWeather.com reports recent incidents on major interstate highways in Arizona Tuesday are just some small examples of what could happen on the highways this holiday season, especially now that we have a developing major blizzard and ice storm.
If there is any single highway that will have the worst travel weather now through Saturday, that would have to be reserved for Interstate 80.
In Iowa Christmas Eve, the storm will cause a buildup of ice that will easily lead to slide-offs and chain reaction accidents.
Farther west in Nebraska, an all-out blizzard is in store along the cross country highway. Enough snow will fall and drift to strand vehicles. Plunging temperatures in this storm can lead to a life-threatening situation for those ill-prepared for the elements.
Farther east from later Christmas Day into the nighttime hours, an ice storm will glaze the highway in portions of Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey.
There will, of course, be other interstate highways that will be hazardous for travel into Christmas, mostly due to the raging blizzard over the central and northern Plains. There are far too many to mention here. However, travel along many highways from Colorado to the Dakotas, eastward to Virginia and Maine, will have their moments.
Even in the South, torrential, gusty thunderstorms and blinding rain will cause problems as well.
At least conditions will improve with each passing day in much of the West.
