New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine remains in critical condition following a traffic accident that resulted in twelve broken ribs, a femur bone broken in two places, a broken sternum and a fracture on a lower vertebrae, as well as several other fractures.
Corzine had been traveling on the Garden State Parkway when he was reportedly forced off the road and struck a guard rail. The 60-year-old governor had been on his way to meet with shock-jock radio show host Don Imus and the Rutgers women’s basketball team when the accident occurred.
The SUV that Corzine was traveling in struck a guard rail after a white pickup swerved to avoid hitting a red pickup truck that was moving onto the highway from the shoulder. Avoiding the red truck, the white truck slammed into the passenger side of the SUV and sent it into a guardrail. Corzine had been sitting in the front passenger seat at the time of the accident.
Corzine was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital where doctors performed two hours of surgery. The governor is expected to recover but the process will be slow. Doctor’s don’t expect Corzine to walk normally for at least three to six months.
The red pickup truck that caused the caused the other vehicle to swerve into the SUV left the scene of the accident.
