Senate Passes Final Version of Healthcare Reform Bill

The U.S. Senate has passed the final version of the controversial healthcare reform bill and it will now need to be reconciled with the legislation passed by the House of Representatives before it goes before President Barack Obama to sign into law.

While the Senate managed to pass their version there could still be problems when it comes to negotiations with the House. Among the key differences in the two versions are the public option which the House supports; restrictions on federal funding for abortion; and how to pay for the healthcare plan. The process of trying to reconcile the differences is expected to begin in January.

Following the Senate’s 60-39 vote in favor of the healthcare reform bill President Obama told a news conference, “We are now finally poised to deliver on the promise of real, meaningful health insurance reform.”

Despite the Senate vote top Republican Senator Mitch McConnell said “The fight is long from over.” McConnell went on to say “My colleagues and I will work to stop this bill from becoming law.”
