Turkish Soldiers Held in Plot to Assassinate Deputy Prime Minister

Eight Turkish soldiers have been detained for allegedly taking part in a plot to assassinate Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc.

While the Turkish military has denied any involvement in a plot to assassinate Arinc there has been a clear divide between the country’s armed forces and the governing AK Party. Turkey has long been in favor of secularism but the AK Party has its roots in political Islam and the two sides have been at odds over the direction of the country.

Friday’s arrests followed an inquiry launched last week after Arinc reported a vehicle with two officers had been spotted several times near his home. According to the military the officers had been investigating an official living nearby and they did not pose a threat to Arinc.
