College Football Scores Meineke Car Care Bowl: Pittsburgh Panthers Get Late Field Goal to Drop North Carolina Tar Heels

Dion Lewis rushed for 159 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries, Bill Stull was 17/24 passing for 163 yards and Dan Hutchins kicked four field goals including the game-winner with 52 seconds left on the clock as the #17 Pittsburgh Panthers (10-3) beat the North Carolina Tar Heels (8-5) 19-17 in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Tar Heels scored first in the opening frame as they grabbed a 7-0 lead on a 15-yard touchdown pass from T.J. Yates to Greg Little. Pittsburgh managed to cut their deficit to 7-3 early in the second when Hutchins kicked a 31-yard field goal. After the Panthers defense forced an N.C. punt the offense turned to Dion Lewis who eventually scored on an 11-yard run and Pittsburgh had their first lead at 10-7. North Carolina pulled even at 10-10 with just over a minute left in the half when Casey Barth kicked a 37-yard field goal but the Panthers reclaimed the lead 13-10 after Hutchins booted a 31-yard field goal as time expired in the half.

Hutchins gave the Panthers their biggest lead of the game 16-10 early in the third quarter when his 42-yard field goal split the uprights but North Carolina would respond with a 14-yard touchdown reception from Little and the Tar Heels had a 17-16 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Pittsburgh’s game-winning drive came after being pinned on their own 5-yard-line with 9:39 left in the game. A 17-play, 79 yard drive was capped with a 33-yard field goal from Hutchins for a 19-17 lead. North Carolina was able to get to midfield on their next possession but four straight incomplete passes from Yates ended eth drive and gave the Panthers the win.
