College Football Scores Emerald Bowl: Matt Barkley Leads USC Trojans Past Boston College Eagles

Matt Barkley was 27/37 passing for 350 yards and two touchdowns, Damian Williams had 12 receptions for 189 yards and Allen Bradford added 72 yards rushing on 17 carries as the #24 USC Trojans (9-4) got past the Boston College Eagles (8-5) 24-13 in the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco.

Barkley got things started for the Trojans in the first quarter, hitting Stanley Havili on a 53-yard touchdown toss to grab a 7-0 lead. Barkley and Havili would hook up again in the second quarter, this time on a 5-yarder and the Trojans looked to be cruising at 14-0. Boston College responded though as Montel Harris scored on a 7-yard run but a missed extra point left the score at 14-6. The B.C. defense then came up big and picked off Barkley, setting up a 61-yard touchdown pass from Dave Shinskie to Rich Gunnell to put the score at 14-13 heading into the half.

On the first play of the third quarter Barkley was picked off by Marcellus Bowman who returned it to the USC 9-yard-line. It looked like the Eagles would grab their first lead of the game but Montel Harris fumbled and Jurrell Casey recovered for the Trojans. That fumble led to a 38-yard field goal from Jordan Congdon and USC boosted their lead to 17-13, an advantage they would carry into the fourth quarter.

Despite USC’s apparent domination in the game the Eagles weren’t out of the game until Shinskie was picked off t the 12:22 mark of the final frame. Barkley followed that interception with a 48-yard toss to Williams to get the Trojans down to the one-yard-line and then Barkley scored on a keeper for the 24-13 lead. The Eagles would have two more possessions but couldn’t manage to get any points on the board as the Trojans defense stepped up to end any threats
