Iranian Protesters Killed in Clash with Security Forces in Tehran

At least four protesters have been killed and scores more injured after a violent clash with the country’s security forces in the capital of Tehran.

According to reports police opened fire on a crowd of anti-government protesters who had gathered in the capital. Official reports have said police only fired in the air to disperse the crowds and did not shoot directly at any of the protesters but one of those killed, the nephew of former presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, was shot in the heart.

Mousavi’s nephew, Seyed Mousavi, was said to be the only shooting fatality while the other three died in accidents related to the protests. Two people were said to have died in car accidents while a fourth fell from a bridge.

Iran has warned against protesters gathering yet those warnings were ignored as thousands took to the streets chanting “Khamenei will be toppled.” Tension between the opposition and the current government has been high since the controversial June election that returned President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to office.
