Ben Roethlisberger threw for 259 yards and a touchdown, Santonio Holmes had five receptions for 86 yards and a score and the Pittsburgh Steelers (8-7) defense forced three turnovers in a 20-17 victory over the Baltimore Ravens (8-7) on Sunday to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Pittsburgh held a 6-3 advantage after the first quarter courtesy of a pair of field goals from Jeff Reed and then moved in front 13-3 early in the second when Rashard Mendenhall scored on a 4-yard run. Baltimore countered with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Joe Flacco to Todd Heap to pull the Ravens to within 13-10 but with 35 seconds left in the half Roethlisberger hit Holmes on a 24-yard touchdown pass to put the score at 20-10 at the break.
Baltimore closed to gab to 20-17 on their first possession of the third quarter as Flacco hooked up with Heap gain, this time on a 7-yard toss and then Billy Cundiff evened the score at 20-20 with a 35-yard field goal later in the frame.
The Ravens had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the fourth quarter when Flacco had Derrick Mason wide open in the endzone but the ball bounced off his facemask. A series of penalties eventually forced the Ravens to punt, ending any scoring threat and the Steelers would take advantage two possessions later as Jeff Reed kicked a 38-yard field goal to put Pittsburgh in front 23-20. Baltimore again had a shot to at least even the score but Flacco fumbled on a fourth and ten, turning tehball over to the Steelers with 2:27 left in the game. After stopping the Steelers on their first two plays it looked like the Ravens would have another shot as they intercepted Roethlisberger but that was called back on an illegal contact call and Pittsburgh was able to run the clock out.
