British Man Facing Tuesday Execution for Drug Smuggling in China

A British man found guilty of smuggling drugs in China will be executed on Tuesday unless he is granted a reprieve by Chinese authorities.

Akmal Shaikh was detained in 2007 after he was found to have 4kg of heroin in his possession while in the northwest city of Urumqi. Shaikh, 53, has denied having any knowledge of the drugs and his defense team argued that he was duped into carrying a suitcase that didn’t belong to him.

Shaikh’s daughter, Leilla Horsnell, has said that her father was approached by a criminal gang in Poland and was told he would be made a popstar in China if he transported the suitcase. His family has argued that Shaikh is bipolar and was not aware of what he was doing but his final appeal was denied last week.

Crowds have gathered outside the Chinese embassy in London calling for clemency and many have expressed hope that he will be granted a last minute reprieve.

It has been 50 years since a European Union citizen was executed in China.
