Stocks are slightly higher in early trading as investors returning from a long holiday weekend respond to good news on retail sales.

Data released Monday shows shoppers opened their wallets more this holiday season, a good sign that consumers are feeling better about the economy.

Keeping the market's gains in check, airline stocks are falling after two security incidents this weekend.

Overseas markets are higher, too. The dollar is falling against other currencies, giving commodities prices a boost. Bond prices are lower ahead of an auction of two-year notes.

In early trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 16.02 points, or 0.15 percent, at 10,536.12. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index added 1.85 points, or 0.16 percent, at 1,128.33. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 2.83 points, or 0.12 percent, at 2,288.52.
